Guarding the Good Deposit

"Follow the pattern of sound words...in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you." 2 Timothy 1:13, 14 *** Biblically-related ramblings from Pastor Jason, Northside Calvary Church, Racine, Wisconsin ***

A Little Fun

An exercise in questionable theology:

Well...there is some sad news in Wisconsin today. The Brewers lost three straight games to the lowly Cubs. I suppose that could be God's judgment. Think of it...an expedition to Iran believes they have discovered Noah's ark. Noah was in trouble after coming out of the ark for raising some grapes, and getting drunk on the wine. God must not like it when people get drunk (check out Ephesians 5), and since that is helped by those who brew alcoholic beverages, God must be judging the Brewers. (Sure, you might argue that the Brewers are around .500 this season [actually they are currently 2 games under .500 and have fallen to third place]. Don't get too excited--that could be God's judgment in letting the Brewers have life their way--check out Romans 1). That must be it, because there certainly can't be any redeeming qualities in the Cubs. After all, it's been since 1908 that they have won the World Series. At least the Royals won in 1985. I had the pleasure of going to the Brewers/Cubs game Friday evening with someone from church. During the loss I enjoyed watching the scoreboard keep up with the Royals' win over the Blue Jays.

Granted, the Royals are (at least at the present time) worse than the Cubs. But at least they are not under God's judgment like the Brewers. They simply have bad pitching. Oh, and sometimes they can't hit. That combination makes for some painful baseball at times. But, God appears to be causing His face to shine upon the Royals because two of their minor league prospects were the stars of the Futures game. One of them was even the MVP. God has seen enough of the Royals persecution from the likes of ESPN, and it looks like God is beginning to be gracious to the Royals which is more than I can say for the Brewers and the Cubs.

As a long suffering Cub fan, I can attest to you that the Cub's 98 year losing streak is not God's judgment. On the contrary, it is evidence of God's grace. it is tribulation which leads to spiritual maturity. I feel I have an abundance of spiritual maturity due primarily to the Chicago Cubs. God works in mysterious ways.

I too was there Friday night. God is just teaching Brewer fans patience as their young players grow to maturity (and giving some small enjoyment out of watching Cubs fans so desperate for ANYTHING to cling to). The Brewers were gracious enough to let the Cubs win a few games in order to bring more Cub fans to the promised land the next few years, so that eventually there will be a revival and they will see the error in their ways and cling to the truth (in the north).

All I have to say to those of you who are slightly less than "True- Blue" Brewer fans is this: There is always hope. "I will rejoice in the Lord always",...despite our loss tonight and futilely picking on teams with un-fruitful names..."I can do all things through Christ Jesus"...even root for those little furry animals or purple robed ex-kings. Hey guys, the season is only half-over as of today. God's holy and devine judgement can fall upon (and be mercifully redeemed) by whom ever He chooses. This year it might be those "Royals", or those pesky Cub's who wouldn't let a few goats eat some grass a long time ago. Judgement? Lets atleast wait until we finish our study in Revelation or the end-of-the-season to pass the buck of sorrowful persecuted names on a team who (atleast) has a great chance to compete with those Red Birds across the state from the Palace of the Kings. Who knows, Maybe a few angels, kings and cubbies might even secretly be Brewer fans...? Thank you Lord for persecution.

The Brewers were able to endure a few losses to the lowly Cubs for a gain in revenue to help ensure our future domination of the league. We keep raising our prices for premium games and the fans still keep flocking in from Sin City to our south.
The Brewers had spent a little more than 20 years in slavery under the Selig "royal" family. 20ish long years of oppression. Then along came our Moses....Mark Attanasio, who is slowly leading us to the Promise Land known as the World Series. The Brewers are clearly God's chosen people and in the end, they will prevail. We have a Christian manager and several Christian players....surely that is a sign that the Lord has found favor with us.
